OCEANFRONT HOUSE study for a new home
realmDESIGN was commisioned to develop a home for a couple who inherited family land on the Atlantic Ocean (Shad Bay). The orientation is spectacular with ocean views to the east and south. The design echoes existing house forms along this coastline, where the traditional roofs protect against the harsh elements while gable ends offer the opportunity to open to natural sunlight. The light is superb as it plays off the white granite and sand indiginous to the area. The owners predict a two-child family, with generous living areas oriented to maximize ocean vistas, (see main level plan of integrated, though separate, living, dining and kitchen areas, as well a loft on the upper level.) Separation for parents' and childrens' bedrooms is necessary, the parents occupying the quiet north-west corner on the main level.
The south elevation demonstrates the concentration of fenestration, capitalizing on maximum sunshine on this rocky Nova Scotian shore.
